Annual Take Your Child to the Library Day
On Saturday, February 4th, 2017, Tolland Public Library
hosted more than 35 parents and children who came to the library as part of the
international event, Take Your Child to
the Library Day.
Take Your Child to the Library Day was launched in 2011 as a grassroots
literacy project in Connecticut. Created by Connecticut librarians Nadine
Lipman and Caitlin Augusta with Connecticut children’s book illustrator/author
Nancy Elizabeth Wallace, it has become an international celebration encouraging
families everywhere to take their children to their local libraries. This year
almost 900 libraries participated in the sixth anniversary of the event, with
Connecticut libraries having the greatest participation nationally.
Here in Tolland, special programs
were planned for children in our community, including Hearts & Crafts (a
valentine cardmaking workshop, with some creations shown above), a reading therapy dog, and a Harold-ebration, a
celebration of Crockett Johnson’s Harold
and the Purple Crayon (below). Families also came in just to browse, read a book or make a bookmark, do a puzzle, play in the puppet theater, or use the children's AWE computers.
According to Children’s librarian
Ginny Brousseau, “Take Your Child to the
Library Day is a wonderful way for people in our community to learn about
the early literacy programs, educational resources and fun events that our
librarians provide for free to the community every day of the year."
